I am currently working on my undergrad in mechanical engineering at Montana State University. I began climbing while camping at the City of Rocks national reserve when I was young but didn’t get serious until I joined the BCT when I was 15. It was at Urban Ascent where I fell in love with sport climbing and pushing myself through harder sequences. I took up outdoor projecting as soon as possible and became psyched on swan falls boulders and Leslie Gulch sport climbs. Climbing has been a good way for me to express a passion. It has taught me how to get through the difficult junctions in life and perseverance in failure.

Where are you now and what are you doing?

I am currently in my sophomore year up in Montana but I am working on transferring to the University of Utah in hopes of more, and better, climbing year around. Right now I am focusing on maintaining my climbing capabilities by climbing as much as possible and some general fitness training. I have been diversifying my climbing as much as possible by taking up trad climbing and bringing outdoor boulders back into my repertoire. I have begun spending my summers working for Idaho department of lands as a wildland firefighter to fund my climbing pursuits throughout the year.

What’s your 5 year dream?

In five years, post college, I hope to have completed my degree and have time to balance climbing, work and life well. In terms of climbing goals I hope in 5 years I have begun and finished my 5.14 projects and consistently climb in that range. Less than five years ago I made the goal of doing the same but with the grade of 5.13 so I don’t see why not.

What do you like best? Indoor or outdoor climbing?

Outdoor but indoor is valuable time spent

Trad, bouldering, or sport?

I like all three practices equally. I can be psyched for any form. It really depends on the route.

What’s your most memorable ascent?

My most memorable ascent has to be The Strappado at the City of Rocks. It is the culmination of my previous two most memorable ascents, the Heretic, 5.13b, and Life Sentence, 5.13c. I linked the two climbs together with the majority of the climbing being in the crux sections of both climbs. It was my first FA and my hardest send to date, 5.13d.

Where is your favorite place to climb?

I don’t really know where that is anymore to be honest. I have been to many areas in the past year and I struggle to decide which place I want to go most. If I had to pick based upon where I have gone most it would have to be either Leslie gulch or the City of Rocks.

What was your favorite competition moment?

It’s actually a post comp moment. Nate Lanza, Sam Willis, my Dad and I were travelling back from sport regionals in SLC. We stopped and climbed at the city of rocks for about 30 minutes. Nate got on lead then but couldn’t finish the climb. I then started to lead to recover his gear but got stuck in a rainstorm while on the wall. The route’s upper section funneled all of the water down the route turning it into a waterfall. That's the story of how I got stuck in a waterfall once. It wasn’t very climactic.

What else do you want the world to know?

I have been trying to take opportunities as they come to me. During 2020 I began making things happen for myself and I started by deciding to become a Wildland firefighter. That season I fought fires in Saint George Utah all the way to the backside of bogus basin. It was an amazing experience that I hope to keep pursuing while the climbing is too hot.
